Accu-Chek Aviva Connect Glucometer Review

The Accu-Chek Aviva glucometer line has three models: Connect, Expert and the basic model. The best of these is the Connect, which is the one we reviewed. As one of the few blood glucose meters with Bluetooth, the Connect is an excellent choice for diabetes patients who want to track their glucose levels more effectively on their smartphones. The high-contrast display is easy to read, and you can check your blood sugar levels in just three steps. While the test strips are available in almost every brick-and-mortar pharmacy and online store, they are also some of the most expensive.

Test-Strip Costs & Availability

Accu-Chek Aviva test strips are compatible only with the Connect, but they are among the easiest to find. We visited local pharmacies and looked at 15 online retailers, and the test strips were available in every store. Only one other glucometer had test strips that were so widely available. This means you can quickly and easily find a store that carries them when you run out. If a store carries supplies for people with diabetes, it almost certainly carries these test strips.

The downside of these test strips is their cost. The average cost per test strip for a pack of 100 is $1.39, and the average cost for a pack of 50 is $1.52. To put these costs into perspective, if you test your blood five times a day, you'll spend about $208 a month on test strips. However, your insurance might cover some of the costs, so it's worth checking with your provider. For comparison, the cheapest brand costs about 23 cents per test strip, which is about $34 a month if you test five times a day.

Design & Features

The Connect is aptly named because it's one of the few blood glucose meters with Bluetooth connectivity and a companion app. When you take a reading, the results automatically transfer to your smartphone and integrate with the app, so you can track short-term and long-term trends with bars and graphs. In addition, you can easily share the results with your physician. Although not everyone needs or wants a device with such extensive data-management features, this capability is great for anyone who has been diagnosed recently or needs to take readings many times a day.

The Connect can store up to 750 readings, which is above average. Because you can easily transfer readings to your smartphone, the internal storage isn't as important as it is with other glucometers.

Ease of Use

As with most glucometers, you can test your blood in just three steps: insert the test strip, lance your finger and touch the test strip to a small droplet of blood. You don't have to add any codes or scroll through other steps before inserting the test strip. The Connect requires 0.6 microliters, which is an average amount for glucometers.

The Final Verdict

The Accu-Chek Aviva Connect is one of the best glucometers for people who need an easy way to track their readings. Its Bluetooth connectivity and app make it exceptionally easy to view trends and pass information on to your doctor. Few brands use test strips that are as readily available, but they also cost a lot more than most glucometers' test strips.
